This is where it all started. Well, pretty close. The first motorcycles were actually bicycles that some crazy guy strapped an engine to. Of course, you had to have a gas tank for the petrol, and some sort of drive system. That's how they did it around 1900.
They're still doing it today too.
Whizzer Motorbike actually opened it's doors in 1939. The first Whizzers were kits - you had to have a Schwinn bicycle and Whizzer would send you the kit to convert it (you can still get this kit today!). It wasn't too long before Whizzers came straight from the factory as full motor-bikes. They were immensely popular in the 1940's and 50's, but as cool as they were, the original company went out of business in 1965.
They're back, as of 1998.
The power plant is still the heart and soul of the Whizzer - it's a 138cc 4-stroke engine.
While the top speed is around 30 mph, that's plenty with the very basic brakes - a small drum on the front, and coaster brakes on the back. You remember coaster brakes, don't you? Pedal backwards and you slow down?
Chalk up the slow speed to the rudimentary transmission - you let the clutch out, you go; pull it in, you can stop.
However, you will get a phenomenal 125 miles per gallon!!!
